“The one who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully” (2 Cor. 9:6).
Throughout her 87 years Sister Mary Gertrude Ann Mueller bountifully sowed seeds of sweetness and kindness in her family, religious community, ministry of education, and compassionate attention to the sick until her death on October 30 at Rosary Care Center in Sylvania, Ohio.
Born in Delphos, Ohio, Susan enjoyed the rural environment and the faith-filled atmosphere of a strong Catholic family as the eldest child of Richard and Gertrude Mueller. She and her seven siblings attended St. John School in Delphos, Ohio where they were taught by the Sisters of Notre Dame. Susan thought about becoming a sister at an early age and in high school became an aspirant of the Sisters of Notre Dame in Toledo, Ohio.
Sister taught children in the primary grades for 24 years in schools of the Diocese of Toledo and 25 years in St. Jude Catholic School in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Sister had a phenomenal memory for her students, even recognizing them by name years later as adults. She not only enjoyed working with the young children, but she also enjoyed being with adults, young and elderly. During the summer months she spent weeks caring for the infirm sisters in the Health Care Center in Toledo.
Retiring from teaching in 2009 she then began her beloved ministry of visiting residents in nursing homes and the homebound taking them Holy Communion and being present to their stories. For the next 10 years she visited over 200 parishioners of St. Jude Parish and St. Ann Nursing home in Fort Wayne annually. Wherever Sister resided, whatever her work, she spread seeds of kindness and demonstrated prayerfulness, gentleness, and generosity along with infectious laughter. One of the marks of her life in community was her wonderful cooking skills. Her family benefited from this gift as well in her Christmas gifts of homemade fudge. Making warm scarves also occupied her extra time.
Sister’s life was nourished by her love and devotion to Mary: her rosary was a close companion especially in her final days. During the month of October her health continued to decline and sisters companioned her every day with prayer and songs. Since her family lives at a distance, it was decided to celebrate her funeral mass on her birthday of November 10 so her family could be present. May she rest in the peace of the good and provident God.
