Jeanne was the first of four children born to Jean Robert and Rita Ann (Remay) Moenk. In 1951 the family moved to the American Army base in Karlsruhe, West Germany, where Mr. Moenk held a civil service position as an army historian. Jeanne began school on the army base but transferred to a local German-speaking girls school staffed by Dominican Sisters. Here she excelled in both language and academic achievements. In 1959 the family returned to Cleveland where Jeanne began ninth grade at Notre Dame Academy, but her father’s new assignment necesitated the family move to Williamsburg, Virginia. At the Academy of Our Lady of Walsingham, Jeanne was profoundly influenced by her teachers and discovered her gift for explaining mathematics to oher students.
After graduation in 1963, Jeanne moved back to Cleveland to live with her grandmother while attending Notre Dame College to study math and music in preparation for a teaching career. After many years of interest in religious life, the influence of her great-aunt, Sister Mary Patricius, and the sisters she met at the college, Jeanne knew she had found her vocation with the Sisters of Notre Dame. In February 1965, Jeanne entered as a postulant. At investment she received the name Sister Mary Bede.
Sister received a bachelor’s degree in math from Notre Dame College, a master’s degree in theology through the Notre Dame Institute in Middleburg, Virginia, and a master’s degree in math from John Carroll University. In 1968 Sister Mary Jeanne began a distinguished teaching career at Regina High School in South Euclid, Ohio. For twenty-three years she introduced girls to the marvels and delights of mathematics. With her ready smile, unique sense of humor, positive approach and ability to clarify mathematical concepts, she became a teacher of immeasurable impact.
In 1994 Sister Mary Jeanne was assigned to Notre Dame College as an instructor in mathematics. She earned a doctoral degree from Central Michigan University. In these advanced studies, her focus was on effective ways to teach math, rather than on abstract mathematics. She returned to Notre Dame College with energy and insights which benefitted students and faculty alike. Sister was active in local and national professional organizations for teachers of math. After retiring from classroom teaching in 2019, she could be found at the Academic Support Center where her efforts and expertise made her an outstanding tutor.
Sister Mary Jeanne moved to the Chardon Health Care Center in 2022. She suffered serious visual impairment, seeing only shadows. Sister faced adversity with grace, kindness, gratefulness and an uncomplaining attitude. These were days when she listened deeply to God’s presence in others and in herself. We are grateful for her life with us—her gifts given through education and her gifts given through her witness of courage as she faced life’s challenges.
Sister Mary Jeanne now sees God face to face.
