As the third youngest of the eleven children born to George and Mary (Hostler) Luli, Dorothy enjoyed a happy childhood. She treasured these years, filled with much activity and laughter. Her parents had loving, joy-filled hearts and deep faith – family remained a source of strength through the challenges of life. She and her siblings grew up in the small, country-like area of Rootstown where she learned to live a simple life filled with gratitude. In the eighth grade Dorothy began to think about becoming a sister. She became an aspirant at Notre Dame Academy in Cleveland at the beginning of her junior year in high school and entered as a postulant on February 2, 1958. At investment she received the name Sister Mary Rayanne.
Sister Mary Dorothy devoted her life to the care of others. After profession, she ministered at Maryhill Convalescent Home in Canton, OH, available to help wherever needed. In 1963 Sister was assigned to the Diet Kitchen in the Infirmary at the Provincial Center in Chardon. She was multi-talented – organizing and training novices, baking, preparing trays and being a friend to each sister patient. Here her interest in nursing grew. She enrolled in Marymount Hospital School of Practical Nursing and graduated as a Licensed Practical Nurse in 1972. For the next nineteen years Sister Mary Dorothy continued to care for the sisters in the Infirmary.
Sister then served as Director of Health Care or Charge Nurse at several nursing facilities before assuming the role of Administrator of the Chardon Health Care Center in1999. She was kind and compassionate, thorough and competent in directing patient care. A new ministry opened for Sister in 2011 as school nurse at St. Helen Elementary School in Newbury, OH. For the past fourteen years she attended to the needs of the children and delighted in meeting and greeting them each day.
Sister’s love for her very large, ever growing family was immeasurable. She was a faithful support to each member as they celebrated the joys and sufferings of daily life. Her love, respect, prayer and care for each sister in community was freely given for over thirty years.
Sister Mary Dorothy wrote, “I thank God for the ministries I have had and for the gifts given me to fulfill them. God’s love is so vividly made visible through those to whom I minister. In turn, I pray that God’s love is present to them through my love, compassion and willingness to be there for them in this precious time of their lives.”
May Sister Mary Dorothy rest in peace.
