Sr. Marie Therese showed us that a well-prepared death is truly peaceful and blessed. When we heard that she had been moved to another room for her final hours, we sensed that the moment she had hoped for had finally come. Early in the morning of Sep. 22, she went to meet the God she had longed for, and we calmly prepared to let her go.
In 2024, when she moved to the provincial house because of cancer, she told the provincial superior, “Since I am going home to God anyway, I don’t want any treatment.” She then peacefully prepared her farewell message for the sisters, arranged her funeral, wrapping up her 48 years of religious life in SND communities.
In the last few days, when the sisters came to visit her, she would talk about happy memories with them, laugh at jokes, and enjoy the fruits they brought. We will treasure those last days with her as a beautiful memory.
Born the second child of three girls and two boys to a generous mother and a conscientious father in Incheon, Hyesuk spent a warm and happy childhood with her siblings. Attending church with her maternal grandmother, she came to know God’s love and care. The love and protection from God she deeply experienced around the time of the first communion became the seed of her religious vocation. She got to know SND sisters and learned more about the congregation through a friend’s younger sister, Sr. Theresa Maria, and this eventually led her to enter on February 26, 1978.
On February 2, 1981, she made her first vows and her first assignment was in administration at Bakmun School. This first ministry at the school where she spent her youth remained beautiful in her mind as a time of happiness and growth. After her final profession on March 1, 1986, she studied theology at Regina Mundi, living at the international motherhouse community in Rome, which she remembered with gratitude. She worked at various ministry places, including parishes and local houses, with responsibility and integrity. In particular, she took charge of finance and administration at pre-schools, carrying out her duties faithfully and meticulously.
In a farewell message to the sisters that she wrote in advance, she reflected on her faith and religious life. “I wanted to know God and learn about God’s presence. Because I wished to secure the way to salvation at the close of my life on earth after serving God well, I entered the convent. The good God fulfilled all my wishes by allowing me to prepare for the last journey through the grace of my cancer. I am grateful for God’s special grace, which allowed me to experience God’s presence and love several times. He granted me two miracles of physical healing and several other experiences. He has always answered my prayers.”
We now entrust our beloved Sister Marie Therese, who walked the path of faith and love as a religious, to the loving embrace of God. Under the clear autumn sky, our community bids farewell to our sister.
