“Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of His faithful ones.” Ps. 116:15

Sister Mary Shobhita was the third among the ten children born to Mr. Augustin and Mrs. Brigit PEZHUMKATTIL. She was Baptized on February 9, 1948, received her first Holy Communion on December 8, 1955, and Confirmation on December 22, 1955. She completed her primary school education but financial difficulties prevented her from continuing her High School studies. She served as a Sunday School teacher in her parish.

She had the desire to be a missionary. By divine providence, Fr. Francis Kandathil, the vocation director of the Palai diocese came to her parish. She spoke to Father Francis about her great desire to be a missionary and he made arrangements for her to complete her studies. She joined the Sisters of Notre Dame in Patna on July15, 1973. In 1974 she did the Montessori Training Course in Calcutta. Within one year she received the knowledge to handle the very young children in the Montessori classes.

She entered the Postulancy on May 25, 1975 and continued her formation in the Novitiate. After her temporary profession she was assigned to the Montessori department of Notre Dame Academy, Patna, and she served the young minds with meticulous care. The family situation had been disturbing Sister Mary Shobhita for some time and so she discontinued her membership in Notre Dame on August 18, 1979. She worked and helped her siblings to complete their studies. After a few years, Sister Mary Shobhita returned to Notre Dame. She made her Temporary Profession again on August 25, 1984 and her perpetual Profession on December 09, 1989.

She served the province in teaching young children and mentally challenged children. She was a great cook and took care of the kitchen duties in small and big communities.

Later she opted to be a missionary to East Africa. She served the people of Nairobi, Kenya from 2002 to 2012. Upon her return from East Africa, she chose to join the Our Lady of the Visitation Province, Bangalore. There, she served as a formator to the temporary professed sisters.

In the meantime, she developed severe health issues and had to undergo several surgeries, which limited her active involvement in the mission. During the last years of her life, she lived in “Shalom Sadan” (Peace House), the infirmary of the sisters of the Visitation Province, Bangalore. Even during her suffering with various illnesses, she was very cheerful. She was a model of suffering in silence with no complaints. Her cheerful face belied the intense suffering she went through during the last stage of cancer. She was completely bed-ridden only for a few days before her entrance to eternity.

May she rest in peace.
