On August 26, Busan Jung-gu Comprehensive Social Welfare Center opened Daon Hankki, a free ramyeon facility where visitors can prepare and enjoy a warm meal. Led by Sr. Joan Maria, head of the Welfare Center, and supported by Sr. Maria Ga In, a social worker, the initiative aims to identify socially isolated individuals and reduce gaps in the social welfare system. The name Daon means “all good things come,” while Hankki means “a meal.”
Daon Hankki is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and is equipped with two automatic ramyeon cookers, a water purifier, a microwave, and a sterilizer. The facility expects to serve approximately 50 people each day. Jung-gu, Busan, is a popular destination for foreign tourists, and the area around the Welfare Center attracts many visitors. Recognizing this, Daon Hankki welcomes tourists as well as local residents, offering a variety of Korean ramyeon noodles and cup rice to accommodate different tastes.
The interior renovations were funded by a 20-million-won grant from the Hometown Love Donation program, while ongoing operating expenses will be covered by donations. Sr. Maria Ga In will take a leading role in managing the facility and helping establish it as a welcoming and sustainable community resource.
Through Daon Hankki, the Welfare Center hopes to offer more than a free meal. The initiative seeks to provide comfort and encouragement to those experiencing hunger while creating a welcoming space where people who may feel isolated can meet others, build relationships, and reconnect with their neighbors.
