Born to Edward Floyd and Vivian (Dresser) Floyd, Laura Mae was the youngest of three children and the only girl. Theirs was a happy household where she learned quickly the give and take of family life and where she was instilled with deep Christian values. She attended Sacred Heart School in Toledo where the Sisters of Notre Dame ministered. A year after graduating from Notre Dame Academy she entered the convent in 1949.
She earned her degree in education from Mary Manse College and began her teaching career in the middle grades of school. She soon had a reputation for being sensitive and compassionate, as well as having excellent teaching techniques. She taught in the Toledo Diocese for 11 years before following her call to be a missionary in Papua New Guinea.
While in Papua New Guinea she ministered in the schools for ten years before changing to pastoral ministries for three more years. Her organizational skills and artistic abilities were evident at Notre Dame High School where she was Headmistress and teacher. In pastoral ministry she found her love for the persons living in poverty, illness, and loneliness.
Returning to the USA in 1981 she continued in education and pastoral care ministries. She loved each person and they grew to love her as well. She was likewise interested and concerned for the clergy of the diocese. She loved her work, but most importantly, she loved the people. Her love for the Eucharist and her devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus grew and deepened over the years as evident in the many pictures and prayer cards she collected. She faithfully prayed before the Blessed Sacrament every day from 10:30-12:00 noon.
Her sense of humor, sense of independence, love for others, and gratitude for little things were her characteristics. In May, Sister was admitted to the hospital but soon realized her final days were approaching and asked to be taken back to the SND Center to be with the Sisters. For two days, the Sisters kept vigil at her bedside for prayerful support.
On the evening of June 4, in her 74th year of profession, Sister Mary Corese surrendered her soul into that of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Her funeral liturgy was celebrated on Friday, June 12, the Feast of the Sacred Heart. May she who was precious, priceless, unique and deeply loved by the God in whose Heart she now resides, rest in his peace forever.
