Marjorie Ann Thiel was the oldest of three children of Joseph and Marian Thiel in Covington, Kentucky. Her family was devoted and faith-filled. Marjorie graduated from Notre Dame Academy in 1954. Shortly thereafter, she entered the Sisters of Notre Dame, where she made her profession of vows on August 17, 1957. A few years later, her sister, Mary Jo, also entered the community, becoming Sister Mary Juanelle.

Sister Marjorie Marie received her Bachelor of Arts in Education from Villa Madonna College (now Thomas More University) in 1968 and furthered her education with a Master of Education at Xavier University in 1975.  As a novice, she started her teaching ministry, which ranged from Harlan, in the mountains of Kentucky, to the suburbs of Dayton, Ohio. She taught all grades from kindergarten to eighth.

Sister’s teaching experience also gave her the ability to serve in other roles. She was a group mother at St. Aloysius Orphanage and the Diocesan Catholic Children’s Home, where she provided stability in many children’s lives. She also worked as the librarian at St. Augustine School, Covington, Kentucky, and St. Joseph Heights. She was even called to assist in the library at the Motherhouse in Rome for three years.

As Sister Marjorie Marie transitioned to retirement, her ministry focused on her community. She served in many facets of community life, working in activities, transportation, and the retirement and tutoring programs. She also enjoyed assisting as communion minister at St. Elizabeth Hospital for over ten years.

Over the years, along with her sister, Sister Marjorie shared many special events with her family: weddings, baptisms, First Communions, graduations, and lots of birthday parties. She always seemed to enjoy being present for these events, and it was a pleasure for her family to have her there as part of these special celebrations. She always sent her family cards for everything. She never missed sending a card for a holiday or birthday. They will dearly miss Sister Marjorie.

Sister left us with a precious memory: One day the director of health care noticed a lovely seashell on sister’s dresser. Sr. Marjorie responded, “Look, it is broken but it’s still beautiful—just like us.”

Sister Marjorie Marie went home to God peacefully, surrounded by her family, sisters, and nursing staff. Visitation, wake, and Mass of Christian Burial were held in the chapel on Monday, June 28, 2021, at St. Joseph Heights. Interment in the convent cemetery followed the 8:30 a.m. Mass on Tuesday morning, June 29, 2021.

May the love with which Sr. Marjorie Marie served her God give her eternal happiness with him forever!
