On the morning of August 7th, we were deeply saddened by the news that Sister Maria Nadir had suffered a hemorrhagic stroke. Despite immediate medical intervention and every effort made, her condition could not be reversed. In a spirit of faith and hope, we gratefully celebrate her life – a journey characterized by selfless service, devotion, and compassion. Wherever she went, she left an enduring legacy of affection, simplicity, and sisterhood.
The eldest of Lauro Petter and Zulmira Löff Petter´s five children, Nadir embraced the responsibility of caring for her siblings from an early age. She carried this special love throughout her life, maintaining close bonds through frequent visits, heartfelt interest in their lives, and a steadfast encouragement to live by Christian values.
By age 12, she had a strong desire to dedicate her life to God, a vocation that solidified while she later worked in a hospital, where she realized that caring for the sick was her path to serving God. Following a period of deep discernment, she entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Notre Dame. After completing her novitiate and making her Promise of Fidelity in Passo Fundo, she made her perpetual profession in Carazinho, surrounded by the parish community to which her family belonged.
Sister Maria Nadir embodied a joyful simplicity and an ever-willing heart. Calm, cheerful, and deeply engaged in community life, she helped make it lighter and more fraternal. Prayer was her source of strength, inspiration, and support in living her vocation and fulfilling her mission. She had a special devotion to Our Lady, Saint Julie, and her Guardian Angel. As a nursing assistant, Sister Maria Nadir´s work was a true ministry, bringing not only professional skills but her whole heart to those in need of healing and comfort.
In recent years, she faced the diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease with grace despite the pain it brought. Even amidst her growing limitations, she maintained her good humor and her ability to make difficult situations seem lighter. Her entire life was anchored in her trust in God, guided by her favorite passage: “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”
May the Lord, who called her home, grant her eternal peace, light, and joy.
