Since the first five Sisters of Notre Dame arrived in Indonesia from the Netherlands in 1934, the community has grown to include places of ministry in Pekalongan, Banjarmasin-Kalimantan, Denggung, Jakarta, Kupang, Lasem, Mejasem, Purbalingga, Rembang, Ruteng-Flores, Sukorejo and Tawangmangu. The first ministry of the sisters was a hospital for the poor. In 1935 they opened a school where they could teach children of various backgrounds including Chinese, Javanese and Muslims. In 2000, sisters from Indonesia began ministry in the Philippines
