In 2001, the Chicken Project began through the organization of Sister Maria Nilse. Today Sister Maria Bernardete continues this project in the Jécua area.
Each month, Sister buys 3500 chicks, and their feed, to sell to local families. About twenty families, some since the beginning of the project, improve their lives by buying, growing and then selling their own chicks. The First Friday of every month is the day to gather at the mission to obtain a new batch of chicks.
