In response to our Congregational Jubilee Plan of dedicating 175 hours of service (beyond our normal ministry), Sister Patricia Marie McClain, Sister Mary Veronica Tong’i, and Sister Mary Livia Aseru responded to the invitation to serve the homeless people at the Caritas Roma Foundation. This organization was started by Pope John Paul II and continues today in collaboration with both the Vatican and the City of Rome.

Caritas Roma aims to promote the Holy Father’s pastoral work for the poor, homeless, marginalized, and disadvantaged people. It serves the elderly and the youth, both male and female, who are sick, mentally challenged, homeless, and hungry. Their services are to provide food and shelter for the homeless, treat the sick, offer clothing and bedding to those in need and so much more. The facility welcomes volunteers both as individuals and as groups. Currently, over twenty religious congregations have committed themselves to offering helping hands. Many businesses, churches, families, and organizations also come to volunteer. We were invited by Brother Francis Atusiimire, a Rosiminian Brother. His congregation (Institute of Charity), among many others, has made a lasting commitment to be of service to the needs of the poor who come to Caritas Roma, every Friday night.  400 to 450 people are served supper daily. 150 people are offered a residence and so many of them come for free treatment in the attached hospital.

We thank God for the wonderful work that is done to serve those in need here in Rome.
