Jesus, you love me so much

On May 30, 2024, in her 59th year of religious profession, Sister Susan Marie Scherger gave back to God her life of 78 years. Born to Louis and Rosemary (Metzner) Scherger, Susan had great love for and pride in her family. She attended St. John Elementary School in Delphos, Ohio before becoming an Aspirant with the Sisters of Notre Dame and attending Notre Dame Academy in Toledo for high school, where she excelled, receiving the highest award in religion. In 1963 Sister joined the Notre Dame community taking the name Sister Mary Louise (later changed to her baptismal name).

Throughout her life, Sister Susan was an avid reader and swimmer spending her leisure time diving into pools and good books. Her love of reading incited Sister to pursue degrees in English from Mary Manse College, Toledo and Indiana University, Bloomington. Sister taught elementary students for nine years in elementary schools in the Toledo Diocese before becoming a high school teacher of English and religion at Notre Dame Academy; St. Mary, Sandusky; St. Joseph, Fremont; St. Wendelin, Fostoria; and St. Francis, Wheaton. Sister then obtained a master’s degree in library science and began a 20-year career at Lima Public Library as a reference librarian.

She was always interested in others and greeted them with a smile. As a reflective thinker who enjoyed reading, her organizational skills equipped her well when it came to research. She enjoyed her ministry at the library assisting students locate just the right reference materials. Sister Susan Marie was most gentle and kind, always very concerned about others’ welfare. She enjoyed the simple pleasures of life. One of those pleasures was swimming. She also liked cooking and with practice came up with some appetizing meals including attractive, delicious desserts.

A favorite saying of hers was, “Jesus, you love me so much!” In 2022 with her health declining, it became necessary for Sister to take up residence in a skilled care center. There she never lost her smile or concern for others. She loved visiting residents and spending time with them. The Jesus whom she loved so much came on the morning of May 30. Uttering her final YES she slipped quietly and peacefully into the arms of her Beloved.

May you now rest in peace.
