“The Eternal God is your refuge, and His everlasting arms are around you.” Deuteronomy, 33:27

Sister Mary Smita, (baptized as Thresia), fondly known as Valsamma, is the third child among the eight children born to Mr. Mathew and Mariyakutty Aerathumuttathukunnel in St. Xavier’s Parish, Vilakkumadam, Kerala, India. There were seven girls and one boy, Joseph, the last born.

Sister Mary Smita completed her high school studies in 1971. She expressed her desire to become a missionary to her parents, but they were unwilling to let her become a religious. In order to pursue nursing studies, she needed to learn English and her nurse sister arranged for her to study English with some sisters in Bangalore. As Divine Providence would have it, she was coming to study English with the Sisters of Notre Dame, Bangalore. Through the influence and guidance of the sisters, she decided to enter and managed to secure the permission of her parents.

On June 01, 1972, she entered as a candidate in the Notre Dame Convent. In her autobiography, she marks it as the happiest day of her life. She began her novitiate on January 01, 1975, in Patna, and made her perpetual profession on May 10, 1984.

Sister Mary Smita was a dedicated and committed full-time teacher in Notre Dame Schools of Patna and Bangalore from 1977 to 2012. Health challenges allowed her to continue only part-time until 2017. She excelled in her teaching career and mingled well with the staff and students. Sister Mary Smita had a spontaneous and pleasant personality. She was generous and capable of empathizing with others. She was trusting, easy to get on with, adaptable and forthright. She was a confident, self – assured, serene and joyful person.

Needing heavy medication for various forms of illnesses, Sister Mary Smita was moved to the assisted living facility of Shalom Sadan (Peace House) in Vijayanagar, Mysore, in 2019. She was taken to the hospital around 5:30 am on July 8, 2025 and went to eternity without much delay by 6: 30 am on the same day. May she rest in peace and may she intercede for all of us with her cheerful spirit and happy disposition.
