Mary Ann was born on Christmas day as the fifth child of seven and the only daughter of William and Anne Ruberg Siebert. She had a deep and abiding love for her family. The Seiberts and Rubergs were a source of so many wonderful childhood memories. The family lived in Fort Thomas, Kentucky. She attended St. Thomas Catholic School and Notre Dame Academy. Shortly after graduating, Mary Ann entered the Sisters of Notre Dame, where she made her profession of vows on August 20, 1956.
Sister Mary Kevan continued her education at Villa Madonna College (Thomas More University) and later became a graduate of Theological Studies at Providence College, Rhode Island. She also studied at Regina Mundi, Rome, Italy. Sister felt especially honored to be educated in theology because it gave her the direct opportunity to make Christ known to those she taught and worked with. As a teacher, she spoke from the heart, leading her students into the material through story-telling, engaging them in discussion and discovery, making the gospel come alive. She was known to start off discussions with “Let me tell you about a man named Jesus.” Sister Mary Kevan cared deeply about her students. She was serious, organized, and held decorum in high regard.
Sister Mary Kevan continued to advance in her ministry and leadership, serving as the Director of Formation and Assistant Provincial in Covington, Kentucky. Her incredible career and ministry then led to her role as the first Chancellor of the Diocese of Lexington, Kentucky, a position she held from 1988 to 1998. Notably, at that time she was the tenth woman to serve as a chancellor in the United States. She was challenged with working with seventy priests in this new diocese, no doubt an opportunity she was ready for and duly embraced. Later she ministered at St. Joseph Catholic Parish, Camp Springs, Kentucky, as Parish Life Collaborator /Administrator for eight years.
After over 57 years of religious and educational ministry, Sister retired to Lourdes Hall. There she enjoyed reading, listening to music, and corresponding with family and friends.
Sister Mary Kevan Seibert went home to God peacefully on October 3, 2020. She was an accomplished educator, leader, theologian, and minister – all the hallmarks of a Sister of Notre Dame. For so many of us she is legendary. May she now rest in God’s peace, and may we always remember the goodness of God’s love that was so alive in her life and the multitude of ways that it touched each and every one of us.
May the love with which Sister Mary Kevan served God and others give her eternal happiness with Him forever.
