“As we give ourselves in love, so we receive love.” Psalm 147
Born Carol Lois, she was the older of two children born to Robert and Clara (Gozdowski) Nadolny. Born in Toledo, Carol grew up near St. Anthony Catholic Church in a highly Polish population, where she attended elementary school under the Felician Sisters. These Sisters had a great influence on the children and taught them to spend their lives for others.
Carol attended Notre Dame Academy where she first met the Sisters of Notre Dame. Graduating in 1954, she entered the Sisters of Notre Dame that same year. In 1955 she was invested with the habit of the Sisters of Notre Dame and received the name Sister Mary Antoni. She developed a love for Mary and in later years she always carried a rosary in her pocket and tried to pray all fifteen decades of the rosary by day’s end.
Receiving a degree in Education and History, Sister spent 13 years teaching on the elementary level in the Toledo Diocese, and 11 years teaching Religion and Social Studies in high schools in Norwalk, Fremont, and Notre Dame Academy, Toledo. Her greatest delight was to teach at her alma mater. Having earned a Master’s Degree in Educational Administration in 1974, Sister ministered as a principal or assistant principal at St. Wendelin Elementary School, Fostoria and St. Mary High School, Sandusky. Sister was also a college instructor at Notre Dame College of Ohio Extension.
After teaching for 34 years, she assisted residents at Aurora House with their finances and record keeping. In 1993, Sister became the Materials Management Coordinator at Aurora (House) Project, a position she cherished until 2007. Sister loved being involved and in service to others. She saw to it that residents at Aurora had the essentials they needed. When she retired from that position due to her own health problems, she put it this way, “I retired from this wonderful place where I had the pleasure of working with women trying to better their lives and those of their children.” One of the women expressed it this way, “Diapers, necessities, gifts, games…with all these and more Sister Mary Antoni has firmly occupied the role of resident godmother.”
Besides all this, Sister volunteered her time for the daily Bread Run, Peace and Justice Committee, and as volunteer at Toledo Hospital and St. Anne Hospital.
In 2016, Sister took up residence at the Ursuline Center where for three years Sister lived quietly and peacefully. She gave back to God her life of 83 years in her 62nd year of religious profession. She is, no doubt, now reaping the rewards of her life of quiet service to others. May she rest in peace.
