Sister Mary Anjanee was the youngest of the four children of Mathew and Aleykutty Kumpalamchira. She was baptized on October 13th, at St. Mary’s Church, Pulinkunnu. Mary grew up in the faith-filled atmosphere of her family, surrounded by the scenic beauty of Pulincunnu, which is on the bank of the Pampa River in Kerala. There Mary attended The Little Flower School run by the Carmelite Sisters, and graduated from high School in 1961.
She felt assured of her call to be a missionary in Bihar and travelled to Bihar with Sr. Mary Delrey and Sister Mary Shalinee in 1961. After a year of study as an aspirant, Mary was sent to Nazareth School of Nursing at Mokama where she studied General Nursing for three years and Midwifery for a year and a year of bond for further experience. As a qualified nurse, Mary entered the Novitiate in Jamalpur on February 14, 1969. The past 50 years Sister Mary Anjanee was been involved in health ministry in the Health Care Centres of the Sisters of Notre Dame: Jamalpur, Bariyarpur, Sheikhpura, Piro, Raxaul (Bihar); Jurodanr (Jharkhand) Somnahalli (Karnataka) and Akalpur (Jammu Kashmir). Along with the health ministry she also was the local superior of different communities for over 15 years.
Sister was ever grateful for the opportunity she had for a pilgrimage to Rome and Germany in the year 2003 and for the various enrichment renewal experiences in the province.
Sister Mary Anjanee left Patna with her priest brother, Rev. Fr Chacko, for their home visit, and for the celebration of her Golden Jubilee with their loved ones at home. On May 27th, Sister developed a serious breathing problem. Fr. Chacko and her family members admitted her to Pushpagiri Hospital, Thiruvalla, and Sister was kept in the ICU for close observation and medical care. Sister Mary Udaya, assistant provincial and nurse, flew down to Kerala to be with Sister. Sister Mary Anjanee had the joy and comfort of meeting her much-loved nieces and nephews and other family members and having Rev. Fr. Chacko, her only living brother close by. Her two nephews, Sister Mary Tessy and Sr. Mary Udaya were there when Sister Mary Anjanee passed away quietly and peacefully at 8: 30 pm on June 16, 2022.
The funeral Mass for Sister Mary Anjanee was at St. Mary’s Church, Pulinkunnu and the burial in St. Mary’s Cemetery immediately after the Mass. Eleven Sisters of Notre Dame managed to get to Pulinkunnu for the funeral service. A large number of Sister Mary Anjanee’s relatives and parishioners were present. Her brother Fr. Chacko and three other priests concelebrated the Holy Mass.
At the provincial house, we had a moving wake ceremony. The Sisters expressed their love and admiration for Sister Mary Anjanee. Sister was a happy, contented, self-sacrificing and hard-working religious. She has been a loving companion and a caring local superior for those she lived with. We offer our dear Sister to the Lord and ask her powerful intercession for each of her sisters, for her relatives and for our One World in need of God’s infinite grace and mercy.
