The parents of Sister Mary Amy were Dr. Richard Hauck and Mrs. Helen Virginia Hauck. They gave her the name Mary Louise Hauck. She had one brother, John Hauck, who passed away some years ago.
Sister Mary Amy grew up in South Gate, California, where she first met the Sisters of Notre Dame when she enrolled in St. Helen’s School in fifth grade. When she completed elementary school she continued her high school education at St. Matthias High School in Huntington Park, California, which was also staffed by the Sisters of Notre Dame.
It was during her high school years that she became attracted to religious life. When asked what attracted her to religious life she said, “I saw that the sisters’ lives were focused on God and out of this single focus a spirit of joyful simplicity, a love for other people and a zeal for the kingdom of God radiated forth.”
Over the years Sister Mary Amy served in many ministries. After her profession she taught school for a number of years, followed by administrative leadership as principal of Notre Dame Academy Elementary School. Sister Mary Amy was called to leadership within the province serving as assistant provincial and then provincial superior.
As provincial superior, Sister Mary Amy made a significant impact on the life of the province by initiating the Associate Program which to date has over 100 members who live the charism and assist the sisters of the California area with outreach projects and ministries within their respective parishes. Sister Mary Amy was also instrumental in founding the Uganda Mission in collaboration with the Covington province. Her efforts helped to lay the firm foundation for the flourishing of Notre Dame in Uganda today. Sister Mary Amy’s commitment to the Congregation as a whole and her desire to work with others for our common mission have been evident in all her accomplishments. In the years after her time in province leadership, Sister Mary Amy served as local superior of the provincial house and as Director of the Temporary Professed.
Regarding the community, Sister Mary Amy was quoted as saying, “The community has been a conduit through which I have received love, acceptance, challenge, guidance and the ability to live my vows with authenticity. Through good times and bad, in joys and sorrows, the community has been the human face of Jesus for me.”
In her last years, Sister Mary Amy suffered from acute rheumatoid arthritis as well as cancer. She bore her sufferings bravely and trusted in God’s provident care. She was appreciative of everything that was done for her and often expressed her gratitude. On April 23, 2024, she peacefully surrendered her soul into the hands of her loving God.
