Sister Dolores Marie (formerly Sister Mary Winfrid) was born on August 12, 1925, in Covington, Kentucky. Her parents, Albert and Sarah Hart Boemker raised six children. Dolores was their third child and only daughter. She described her childhood as very caring and secure, made so by very loving parents.
She attended St. Aloysius Elementary School in Covington and then graduated from Notre Dame Academy in 1943. It was at Notre Dame Academy where Dolores felt a strong unity with the sisters who taught her. After graduation she worked as a long-distance telephone operator for AT&T until joining the Sisters of Notre Dame in 1946.
Sister Dolores Marie received her BA from Villa Madonna College and started her ministry teaching at local elementary schools until 1962. She then attended Rosary College in Chicago, earning her MA in Library Science. She served as librarian in several local schools and even traveled to Rome, Italy, to work as librarian in the Motherhouse of the Sisters of Notre Dame. Many remember Sr. Dolores Marie as the soft spoken and caring librarian. She had a way of making each person feel as if they were the only one she was helping.
After many years of service, sister retired to Lourdes Hall Care Center in 2009, where each day sister loved to play scrabble and word games. She enjoyed just being with people and always greeted visitors with a warm smile. She possessed a gentle charisma.
The caption under Sister Dolores Marie’s Notre Dame Academy year book best describes her:
A blessing she is: God made her so,
And deeds of week-day holiness
Fall from her, noiseless as snow.
A blessing she is, a blessing she has always been. God made her so and gave her to all of us.
May she rest in peace.
