“Lord, into your hands be all things, the beginning and the end!“

Josefa Hubbeling was the twelfth child born to Heinrich Hubbeling and his wife Christine, née Esseling. From the age of six to fourteen, she attended basic primary and secondary school in Dömern. After leaving school, she went to live as a domestic help with relatives for two years; then she came to work as a trainee cook in a parish household in Nienberge for a few months. After that, she returned to her parents‘ house. She was involved in the parish youth and took on responsibility as a group leader for a girls‘ group with joy and enthusiasm. Over time, she made the decision to become a religious sister. So, she entered our congregation in Ahlen on September 2, 1950 and at her investment, on April 3, 1951, she received her religious name Sister Maria Hermenfried. Her brother Norbert joined the Canisians in Münster; he died on August 26, 2005. In the last few years, Sr. Maria Hermenfried spoke repeatedly about hunting accidents in which two of her brothers died. Then her voice became melancholic and sad.

After her first profession, she was sent to work in various institutions of our congregation. Her way led from Oldenburg via Münster, Ahlen, Wilhelmshaven to Pius-Kolleg in Coesfeld. Here she worked in the cafeteria of the boarding school. She loved being with young people, later also at the student hostel in Münster and at the Marianum. After her final profession, she completed her training as an economist in Paderborn and then trained as a geriatric nurse in Geseke. For many years she worked in Katharinenstift in Coesfeld until she finally moved to Kloster Annenthal. She helped on our nursing ward and did little jobs.

For many years, Sr. M. Hermenfried was active and able to organize her retirement the way she wanted to until she had to move to the nursing ward because her health was declining. There she received the help and care she needed. Her eyesight deteriorated more and more. She took part in social gatherings in the community and was happy when her family came to visit her. Last year, she was still able to celebrate her seventieth anniversary of religious life with many guests.

In recent years, she has become more and more quiet. She felt the end of her life. “If only heaven would come and fetch me” was her urgent wish. This wish was fulfilled in the night hours of August 17, 2024.
