In the morning of November 6 Sister Mary Audrey completed her earthly journey. Formerly known as Sister Mary Leona, Sister Mary Audrey, 87, was the third of eight children born to John and Leona (Langenderfer) Kreuz. Sister grew up on a farm in Swanton, Ohio, where she developed hobbies of gardening, sewing and cooking. Having attended school at Immaculate Conception Marygrove and Notre Dame Academy, Sister M. Audrey began her formal training as a Sister of Notre Dame in August 1948. Sister Mary Audrey was the niece of our deceased Mother Mary Anselm Langenderfer.

Education was Sister Mary Audrey’s field of ministry. As a principal she was known for her forward vision and innovative programs. Sister spent 53 years in education as teacher and/or principal in several Catholic elementary schools in the Toledo Diocese as well as Michigan and Indiana. She was often awed by the spirituality of young people and felt privileged to prepare them for the sacrament of confirmation. Throughout her years of semi and active retirement Sister tutored at Notre Dame Academy, Read for Literacy Program, and Women Blessing Women Program. Energetic, caring, and determined, she filled leadership roles on the community and Diocesan level.

Sister’s love for flowers and plants came naturally, learning the art of transplanting seedlings on the family vegetable farm. She enjoyed music and singing, and laughingly remarked that somehow though God forgot to give her a voice to go with it. Sister was also a very accomplished seamstress. Trained in Home Economics, she had a gift for altering clothing.

Sister Mary Audrey experienced strong and loving bonds with her community and family. Her listening heart would respect your feelings and opinions while remaining free to offer her own when these differed. It was important to her that one contribute to the quality of life in the community in which she lived.

Despite surgeries and much pain over a number of years Sister spent herself in service to the community. The conviction of God’s never ending affection for her is what sustained Sister Mary Audrey through all the ups and downs, and the hills and valleys of life, and guarded her heart with the peace of Jesus. May she now live joyfully in his light!
