Give me nothing more than your love and grace.
These alone, O God, are enough for me.
Dorthea was the first-born to Dwight and Marcella Arndt in Bellevue, Ohio. Two years later her brother was born followed by her sister who was born 8 years later. Dorthea was 18 years old when she lost both her mother and her only brother in death. While they were no longer physically present with her, they still held a significant memory in the life of Dorthea and her younger sister Dinah. Throughout the years Dorthea spent quality time with her family of numerous cousins and nieces and nephews on vacations, trips, and family celebrations.
After graduation from high school in 1962 she began working at Immaculate Conception School helping the Sisters. Through this experience she realized her love for children and her desire to become a teacher. Thus she began her college studies in 1967 while also discerning a religious vocation. She entered the Notre Dame community in Toledo, Ohio in 1970 at the age of 26 where she found joy in teaching students in grades 1 and 2 in Ohio, Michigan, and Indiana. She thoroughly enjoyed preparing the young children for their First Holy Communion.
Sister Dorthea Marie enjoyed life and manifested a spirit of joy whether in the classroom or in community life. She participated in the parish choirs and eagerly attended any activity that was planned. She was known for paying attention to little things, the beauty and wonders of nature. God let her joy and easy laughter spill over to brighten the lives of hundreds of children. Her relational gifts made everyone feel at home. Her love for music was quite evident by her singing and playing guitar and piano. Whether a classroom teacher, teacher aide, tutor, caregiver or in community service, Sister Dorthea Marie evidenced the words of one of her favorite songs: “Give me nothing more than your love and grace. These alone, O God, are enough for me.”
In 2023 Sister Dorthea Marie took up residence at Rosary Care Center in Sylvania, Ohio, to receive the skilled care she needed. Even here she was known for her sense of humor and teasing spirit. She enjoyed meeting new people and spending time on various craft projects which allowed her to share by giving her crafts as gifts to others.
In February 2026 Sister Dorthea Marie was hospitalized with pneumonia. She characteristically surrendered all, and on February 25, in her 82nd year of life, Sister died peacefully, placing herself in the arms of the God who has always loved her.
