It’s the beauty within us that makes it possible for us to recognize the beauty around us. Sr. Joan Chittister, O.S.B.
At a geriatric workshop Sister Barbara Marie learned that it was her responsibility as well as her privilege to learn everything she could about each Sister in her care, namely her favorite candy bar, her favorite color, but also to learn what each Sister was NOT saying as well. In other words, she needed to be perceptive enough to learn the language of the heart of each Sister. Sister Babara Marie took this seriously and all through her life she tried doing just that: picking up the language of the heart of each Sister.
Barbara was born the fourth child of five to Walter Sloan and Alice Boes Sloan in Toledo, Ohio. From her youth, she desired to become a Sister of Notre Dame as she became familiar with them while she attended St. Mary School in Toledo, Ohio, as well as following the example of her aunt, Sister Mary Jean Francis Boes, who entered the community in 1947. Barbara attended Notre Dame Academy where in her sophomore year she became an Aspirant of the Sisters of Notre Dame. Throughout her 85 years of life and 65 years of religious profession Sister Barbara seemed intent on being a true disciple of Jesus.
Invested in 1958 as Sister Mary Loyol, she later changed her name to Sister Barbara Marie. As a temporary professed sister she began her 45 year career in education beginning as an elementary school teacher in the Toledo Diocese and then to Indiana and Florida and eventually ministering as a principal of elementary schools in Michigan and Florida. She always found a creative way of discovering that each child mastered what she was teaching. Through her hands-on approach she spun her magic and the children as well as the parents loved her for it.
When Sister retired from teaching elementary students in 2009, she found energy in sharing the faith with adults in parish ministry for six years. In 2015 Sister began a beloved ministry as community coordinator of Woodhaven House at the SND Center in Whitehouse, Ohio being with our elder sisters. Sister loved to gather the Sisters for parties and treats celebrating special days with surprises and outings. Her love of nature and cooking endeared her to many joyful occasions. Her family also was very much part of her visits and vacations.
On May 1, 2025, the feast of St. Joseph, patron of a Happy Death, Sister Babara Marie found that her time of suffering and weakness was being transformed into eternal joy and peace. Throughout the year she had predicted that she would not be here to celebrate her jubilee and that the Easter season was to bring forth her reward. May she be at peace in the embrace of her Risen Savior.
