“With long life, I will satisfy them and show them my salvation.” (Psalm 91:16)

With hearts full of gratitude and reverence, we praise God for the precious life of Sister Maria Agostinha, who returned to the Father´s House on April 4, 2025 at the age of 105. At the time of her death, Sister Maria Agostinha was the oldest sister in our congregation.

Aida was the third of 14 children born to Alfredo Cassol and Rosa Valgarenghi Cassol, a family that nurtured deep Christian values and supported itself through agricultural work. She remained closely connected to her relatives, and she rejoiced in their company whenever they visited her.

Aida felt the call to religious life from an early age and entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Notre Dame in 1943, receiving the name Sister Maria Agostinha. In 2023 she joyfully celebrated her Jubilee of Peace, marking 80 years of consecrated religious life.

Sister Maria Agostinha was an outstanding cook, a ministry she carried out with love and dedication paying special attention to the needs of the sick, the elderly, and her fellow sisters, recognizing Christ in each one of them. For more than two decades, she served in the kitchen of Dr. Victor Lang Charity Hospital in Caçapava do Sul, and later at Rosinha Borges Home for the Elderly, as well as the sisters’ Residence in the same city. Altogether, Sister M. Agostinha served for 54 years in Caçapava do Sul.

She also served in Sant’Ana School – Herval do Sul/RS; Santa Catarina School – Santa Maria/RS; Brasilina Terra Charity Hospital – Tupanciretã/RS; Nossa Senhora da Saúde Hospital – Ivorá/RS and, most recently, in the community of Recanto Aparecida – Canoas/RS.

Sister Maria Agostinha was a presence of prayer and a committed member of the community. She faithfully participated in community life, both in spiritual experiences and other gatherings such as retreats and various leisure activities. Sister was kind, calm, attentive, and always available. She was loved and respected by her fellow sisters, staff members, and everyone who had the privilege of living with her.

In 2008, she joined the community of Elder Sisters at Recanto Aparecida in Canoas, where she continued to be a serene, prayerful, and sisterly presence, cultivating the joy of shared life and faith.

We thank God for Sister Maria Agostinha´s long life, for her witness of fidelity to God´s call, and for the 82 years of consecration as a Sister of Notre Dame. Her life reflected her trust in a good and provident God, who guided her along many paths, making her a discreet yet powerful light in the mission of the Church and the Congregation.

Rest in peace, dear Sister Maria Agostinha. Your legacy lives on among us.
