Sister Julita Maria possessed a remarkable artistic talent. Her eyes sparkled with deep appreciation for the greatness of God reflected in His creation. Through her paintings, she captured the beauty of being part of God’s work in this world, called to live and bear witness to His goodness.
Sister was the twelfth of fifteen children born to Pedro Regert Sobrinho and Elisa Maria Regert. This large, faith-filled family dedicated four daughters to the Church and to the Sisters of Notre Dame: Sisters Ottilia Maria and Maria Ermelinda (both deceased), and Sisters Maria Leda and Julita Maria. In addition, the family included two Jesuit brothers: Brother Leo (deceased) and Brother Bertoldo. Their oldest brother, Clemente, died in 1939 while a seminarian in the Society of Jesus.
One can easily imagine the joy in the Regert family when the religious brothers and sisters gathered at home, sharing their experiences and enriching the family with blessings. The sisters often visited their family at the same time, and on special occasions, even went on camping trips with the family.
While studying to become a teacher, Sister Julita Maria spent several years serving our communities through household chores and gardening. Upon completing her teaching training in 1980, and infused with the essence of Jesus´ teaching style she applied various pedagogical principles in her ministry. Beginning in 1991, she dedicated herself to crafts and painting, all the while maintaining a steadfast interest in gardening.
Throughout her life, Sister fulfilled her mission across various communities in Our Lady Aparecida Province. An experience that deeply enriched her was the four years (1998-2002) she spent with a group of missionary sisters in the state of Tocantins. Initially, she was engaged in pastoral care both in the city and in rural communities. Later she coordinated the Centro de Promoção Humana Santa Júlia in Paraíso do Tocantins, a school for poor children. Sister Julita Maria delighted in assembling the children to practice songs and stage performances for their parents. At the same time, she actively participated in various pastoral activities, including assisting the elderly, visiting families, and providing guidance to CEBs (Church Base Communities). In 2008, she returned to Tocantins again where she spent another four years working in the city of Santa Rosa.
In recent years, Sister Julita Maria has been a member of the Recanto Aparecida community, actively participating in prayers and community life and engaging in various small community services.
Because of grave health complication, Sister Julita Maria was admitted to Ernesto Dornelles Hospital in Porto Alegre, RS, on May 17th where she was diagnosed with a severe pulmonary embolism. In the early hours of Saturday, May 18th, at the age of 87, Sister Julita Maria peacefully surrendered her life to the One she had loved so dearly, guided by the hands of Mary. We are grateful to dear Sister Julita Maria for her live and witness of God’s goodness and provident care in our Congregation. May she now be our intercessor with the good God.
