The first Sisters of Notre Dame arrived in Mozambique in 1993.

Mozambique is a mission of the Holy Cross Province, Passo Fundo, RS – Brazil

At the invitation of Bishop João Francisco Silota, on October 1, 1993, the Sisters of Notre Dame from Passo Fundo, Brazil, established a mission station “Ad Gentes” in Mozambique. After several months of inculturation, the four pioneer sisters were asked to take responsibility for the Center of Formation in Marera.

For five years the Sisters went as an itinerant team to various locations in suburbs, villages, and rural áreas, evangelizing, giving catechesis, promoting and forming leaders, teaching home health care and others.

In 2000, at the request of the bishop, the sisters transferred their residence to Jécua where they took over “Lar Cristo Rei,” a boarding school for young women from age 12 to 24, studying in public schools.

In 2001, the Sisters established a formation house in Chimoio, the capital of Manica, Mozambique. The formation house provides na appropriate place to assist young women in discerning their vocation.

Currently, the Sisters minister in Chimoio, Jécua, Gorongoza and Tete.
