Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. 1 Jn 4:11

We celebrate the life and love of Sister Mary Joetta, who, in her 89th year, went home to be with the God who loved her and taught her to love others with that same love.

JoAnn was born, the youngest of eight children, to Bernard and Frances (Borer) Sneider in Toledo, Ohio. She attended St. Teresa Elementary School in Toledo before enrolling at Notre Dame Academy for her secondary school years. After graduation she entered the Sisters of Notre Dame and was invested in 1947, receiving the name Sister Mary Joetta.

From 1948-1963 Sister Mary Joetta taught in Catholic elementary schools in the Toledo Diocese. For the next 19 years she taught mathematics and was guidance counselor at secondary schools in Norwalk, Sandusky, and Notre Dame Academy in Toledo. With her special gifts of preciseness and exactness, she supervised the construction of the Notre Dame Academy chapel from 1979 to 1980. Then she offered her gifts of exactness in the finance office of the Sisters of Notre Dame assisting the Provincial Treasurer for ten years. In 1992 she took up her ministry as pastoral minister to the sick and elderly. It was a ministry close to her heart that she felt privileged to embrace for 13 years.

Her gifts of compassion and sacrifice were evident in her ministries as she helped teachers and students, affirming them and lending a listening ear, playing games on the playground with them, promoting vocations, and also by driving others to events and appointments.

She believed in and practiced the idea that gifts given were to be shared as gifts.

When she took up residence at Rosary Care Center on April 1, 2011, it was with great joy that she began building friendships with the other residents there. The love of Christ so deeply rooted in her being manifested itself through her kind words and deeds, encouraging others and gifting them with small treats.

On the morning of June 19, in the 68th year of her profession, Sister Mary Joetta entered her eternal home. From her new vantage point she became the heavenly intercessor for safe and efficient packing, moving and transporting of the Provincial Center offices from Secor Road to Sunforest Court, which will occur on June 26. May she be forever embraced by her Loving God.
